I feel most lost in my life when I'm not actively following my dreams or when, instinctively, I'm heading off course and my goals are no longer relevant to my current circumstances. I know that probably comes off sounding totally nerdy, but from my experience, when I write down or distinguish clearly defined dreams and goals, stuff starts happening for me in freaky ways.
