There is no denying that I am a massive advocate of our Australian independent/unsigned music industry and November is Oz Music Month. Over the years, as the music industry has evolved into the monstrosity that it is – where almost every singer played on the radio has to sound like Rhianna or Beyonce or Usher – I have placed all my hope in the hands of the little guys. And I will promote them as much as I can, just to see their pure, unspoiled talent be appreciated!

I have mentioned some of these before:

The Butterfly Effect

The Art of Sleeping

St Petersburg

And some of my other faves:

Gotye – what a powerhouse! He records all his own music, makes all his own samples and mixes them himself, writes great songs, and sings. And, with the release of his new album – Making Mirrors – this marks his third independently released album and a plethora of awards to his name. Rock on, drummer boy.

Holland – I mentioned Holland when I saw them live in Brisbane in August. They are slowly releasing songs off their album and they are pretty awesome. You can get a preview on their Facebook page. What You Mean To Me is one of my favourite songs at the moment, can't get enough of it.

Matt Corby – He was on Australian Idol one year, but don't hold that against him. I discovered Matt Corby on Underbelly and his music is Buckley-esque. Beautiful and highly recommended.

Enter Existence – Side project of some of the members from The Art of Sleeping, Enter Existence has a similar sound, and I absolutely love it. They only have a two-track EP at present but check it out. And, you're welcome.

The others you will have heard of: Angus and Julia, Karnivool, The Temper Trap, Sia, Silverchair, Eskimo Joe and so on, and so on, and so on.  I will leave it at that but if you're in the mood for some awesome local music, these are some you could definitely get into.

I love Aussie music.  Have you discovered Passenger?  I don’t think he’s an aussie but I love what he did with ‘Flight of the Crows’.  It’s my favourite album at the moment.
