cupcake decorating class

On Saturday, I went to a cupcake decorating class. It's something that I've wanted to do pretty much since I started my baking challenge and I'm so glad I did it. SO much fun. I mean, what isn't fun about sitting with a bunch of cake-lovers, making delicious cupcakes look amazing? Exactly.

The class was by Cake Decorating Solutions at Willoughby in North Sydney, but there are classes all around Sydney (this was just the closest to me) and I got a ridiculously good deal online ($59 for a three hour course through Groupon!).

We did a mixture of fondant and butter cream decorating and, I have to say, I was pretty stoked with the results. The instructions were surprisingly simple to follow and it made me realise just how easy it can be to make cake look really good. You just have to know what to do and have a little bit of imagination.

The class is pretty fast-paced if you're a perfectionist (ahem) but slow enough that you can understand what you're doing and keep up. The fondant cakes look the best because of what you can do with this colourful sugary ingredient, but buttercream is always a winner and learning to pipe that flower was, perhaps, my greatest achievement of the day!

So hopefully I'll be able to implement some of the things I learned into future baking challenges.
